Abstract: In some problems of bearing capacity, especially for heavystructures, it is desirable to gain an approximate quantitative estimate from laboratory tests, and in those cases it is usual to carry out an unconfined compression testand estimate the allowable load by empirical rules. In this study the selected 28 core specimens were tested between the steelplatens of hydraulic compression testing machine to determine the unconfinedcompressive strengths. In addition, some zones of the rock in core boxes, fromwhich the cores were extracted, were tested with the Schmidt hammer in order toinvestigate any relationship between unconfined compressive strength and heightof rebound of the hammer. To make more adequate judgements in evaluating the test results, moisturecontent, carbon content, specific gravity, bulk density and porosity determinationswere made and conclusions were drawn.
