Abstract: The study area is located within the Suşehri-Gölova basin on eastern part of the North Anatolian FaultZone (NAFZ). Great devastating earthquakes have been occurred on this highly active seismic fault zonein near historical period. The last great earthquake causing loss of many life and properties was occurredon 27 December 1939 in Erzincan along the eastern part of the NAFZ. This earthquake has createdhundreds of kilometers surface rupture, and can also be traced in the study area. Significant information isobtained by early paleoseismological studies carried out especially on the middle and western parts of theNAFZ proving important data about earthquake return periods and magnitudes of seismic activity in theperiod. Paleoseismological studies on eastern part of the NAFZ are less than western part of the NAFZ.In this study, three trenches were excavated on the 1939 Erzincan earthquake surface rupture. Thesetrenches are located from west to east, in Eskibağ, Aşağıyeniköy and Aşağıtepecik villages. Eskibağtrench was excavated on a sag pond to the southeast of Sevindik and northeast of Eskibağ villages. AşağıTepecik trench was excavated on the same lineament to the northeast of Aşağıyeniköy where a clear faultmorphology is observed. The Aşağı Tepecik was excavated 2.5 km southeast of the Lake Sut. These trenchdata are significant because of showing data of large earthquakes repeated during Holocene times. Besidethe fact that 1939 surface rupture was observed, the earthquake ruptures formed before 1939 were alsoobserved on trench logs. It is showed that 1939 earthquake surface rupture follows older ruptures andreveals the existence of several different seismic activities prior to 1939 earthquake.

  • Evidence of Climate-Driven a Sea-Level High Stand During the Penultimate Glacial Period

Abstract: In this study, coral records of sea-level changes as a proxy of past ice volume variations suggest that thesea-level rose up to -40/-50 m bpsl during the Penultimate Glacial period which is characterized by aseries of climatic instability, and constituted a high sea-stand at around ~177-168 ka BP. During the sametime interval, other proxy records of past climate (δ18O records of deep sea sediments, speleothems, pollenrecords, CO2, CH4, δD, dust records derived from Antarctic ice cores) show the enhancement of monsoonalactivity in tropical regions, occurance of an organic rich sapropel formation in the Mediterranean dueto the halt of the deep water formation, prevailing wet climatic conditions and the expansion of arboreal vegetation in mid-latitudes and decrease in the ice-volumes in polar regions. These sequence of eventspoint out that climatic instability in this time interval is driven by 65° N insolation. This in turn indicatesthat orbital parameters of the astronomical theory, the main driving forces of the climate and sea-levelchanges over glacial-interglacial time scales, are also a major forcing factor of the climatic instabilitybetween ~177-168 ka BP.

Abstract: In order to determine which directions effective stress in Yozgat - Sorgun basin during Lutetian, mesoscopicstructural elements which are basaltic dykes, joints and fold axes developed within volcano- sedimentaryrocks evaluated together. Dykes were interpreted by rose diagram, has NNW-SSE trend. Trends of jointsets were developed within Lutetian volcanic rocks in the study area, are WNW-ESE, NNW-SSE andNNE-SSW directions. As these WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW oriented fractures were sets of shear joints, the set of NNW-SSE oriented fractures were evaluated in the tension joints. Compression direction in thestudied area was determined NNW-SSE with using rose diagram. Folds observed in the Eocene volcano-sedimentary rocks in the study area were formed with compression. This compression direction evaluatedNNE-SSW. Positions of dykes and other mesoscopic structures in the region connected collision of thenorthern Sakarya Zone and the southern Kirşehir Block and post - collisional convergence of N-S. Thesestructures shows NNW-SSE compressional tectonic regime in Yozgat - Sorgun Basin during Lutetian.
